Rudaí 23 Reflection

Reflection

What do I need to achieve to receive my Visual Communicator Badge?

  • We are looking to see if all aspects of the tasks in Things 3-5 are completed and you show a good understanding of the topics.

Thing 3 Image Banks.

I feel I have a good understanding of finding images online, I use Google and Pixabay and understand that it is very important to credit works that you are unsure of.
I do prefer Pixabay as you are guaranteed that the image is free to use.
I use it in my work a lot as it is great to add images with text on social media, to brighten up and attract people to your post or tweet.
Flikr is not a space I go to find an image for my own use. However, I do find it a great space to see what photos have been shared, for instance, The British Library it is an interesting space to see how you can create a digital library.

Thing 4 Communicating Visually

Working as a social media and marketing coordinator I need to communicate visually every day, to attract followers to our Twitter page and Facebook posts. I am fortunate that we have a beautiful garden where we produce vegetables and herbs and there is always someone growing their own produce. We have had some visitors over the summer, lots of bees love our flowers and the butterflies take up a home in the warmth of the tunnels, where we then have a family of caterpillars. All of these are very photo friendly.

Photofunia was very fun and great to grab the attention of your users.

Video is something I need to become better at, so in Thing 4 I concentrated on images, however, today I am going to try Quik and upload a lovely video of Rudaí 23 Networking morning that we had in Galway.
Check out the video here.

Thing 5  Video Presentations

Video Presentations I find very effective, Screencast-O-Matic is very useful if you are giving a basic introduction to a new tool. I have done this on Twitter and Facebook. It is a lot more effective than using screenshots and step by step instructions.
Powtoon can be a bit tricky. I find it is better for announcements or advertising new programs rather than instructions. The settings can be difficult to maintain, I found the first time I used it I had the upgraded package but when I went back in the content was gone because the had an expiry date on that specific one and I had to start all over again.

If I was to go back and edit each Thing I would definitely make it relevant to what I am doing at the moment, be that as a social media person or someone running a library committee.
I feel I would search for my creative side and have a little more fun with each thing, making an instructional video about Twitter is very bland so how could I make it more fun or engaging to people?

  1. Very nice! I definitely agree with your assessment of Powtoon, which I have a fair bit of trouble with -- both as a viewer and occasional producer of Powtoons. Do you have a favourite video tool for making instructional videos as opposed to promotional ones? --Kris
